So the test described above confirms: the electronic volume IC, the output amplifier IC mounted tro the heatsink (AP5), the speaker wiring, the speakers and the rotary volume control. I have confirmed that it does indeed control the volume. The rotary control I ask in my question #2 is a volume level setting. I've injected an audio source via a coupling capacitor to the input of IC14 (M51132L - Electronic volume) and get sound out of the speakers. It is now working except there is no sound even though all the speakers are wired. It was rat infested but I was able to clean it out and repair traces on the reel interface PCB (made a schematic of the reel interface PCB if anyone is interested).
